What is internal cleansing?

The elimination of toxins and waste from the body is referred to as internal cleansing or detoxification. Just like you wash your external body everyday, your internal system needs a cleansing as well. We cleanse our bodies externally but most of us don’t consider cleansing our internal organs. Like cleansing the outside of your body, cleansing the inside is very important to optimal health.

Why is internal cleansing important?

Over time, toxins build up in the body as a result of our exposure to pollution in the air we breathe, water we drink and the food we eat. Our bodies are designed to eliminate these toxins through the liver, lungs, skin, kidney and colon. But these toxins build up and overwhelm our ability to remove them effectively. For many people this ability to “self purify” is even more difficult because of exposure to heavy metals, cigarette smoke, alcohol, pollution, medications, preservatives and pesticides. Internal cleansing or detoxification removes these toxins from your body in a gentle, safe and natural way. By detoxing your body, you can achieve your ideal weight, have more energy, and live a life free of aches, pains and illnesses.

How can cleansing help me lose weight, have more energy and feel better?

Because internal cleansing eliminates excess waste in the colon, the digestive organs are able to function more efficiently, which results in greater absorption and assimilation of nutrients as well as helping to control the appetite. Cleansing the organs can also improve their performance, thereby increasing your metabolism. Perhaps one of the most important roles of cleansing is that it allows you a “fresh start”. With an increased state of well being, renewed energy and clearer thinking, internal cleansing can help jump start your weight loss program.

What is colon hydrotherapy?

One of the ways to detox and cleanse your body is through colon hydrotherapy, also known as colonic irrigation or colonics. Colon hydrotherapy is one of the hottest trends in the holistic health field and has been practiced for thousands of years. Just like you get an oil change for your car every 3000 miles, your body needs an internal cleansing in order to function at its’ best. Colonics can help with weight loss, increased energy, clearer skin and a feeling of more mental clarity. By treating your body naturally, without the use of drugs, your body can heal itself the way nature intended.

What is the history of colon hydrotherapy?

Although colon hydrotherapy has become a trend among Hollywood and the holistic health field, colonics have been practiced for thousands of years. Historically, the enema was first recorded in 1500 B.C. There are reports of frequent use of enemas as a mode of treatment by Egyptian, Babylonian, Assyrian, Hindu, Greek, Roman, Nigerian and early African races. Hippocrates, the father of modern day medicine, in the fourth century B.C. recorded using enemas for correcting hundreds of medical conditions.

By the early 20th Century, with the advent of rubber, the enema slowly gave way to the present-day colonic equipment, providing a significantly improved method of accomplishing colon cleansing. Around 1910 the therapy gained the attention of such physicians as James A. Wiltsie M.D., and Joseph E.G. Waddington M.D. who placed great value on the therapeutic benefits of colonics. Dr Kellogg reported in the 1917 Journal of American Medicine that in the treatment of gastrointestinal disease in over 40,000 cases, he had used surgery in only twenty cases. The rest were helped as a result of cleansing the bowels, diet, and exercise.

Up to the late 1920's many doctors’ offices and hospitals had colonic equipment and articles dealing with colon health frequently appeared in prestigious medical and scientific journals until the early 1930's. At that time modern medicine began focusing on drugs, laxatives and surgery. Recently, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in using natural approaches for healing the body, and colonics have rapidly been regaining popularity.

How does colon hydrotherapy work?

Colon hydrotherapy is like an internal bath or cleansing where toxins are naturally removed from the colon. A small amount of warm filtered water is introduced into the colon by means of a disposable, sterile, lubricated nozzle. The action of the water gently stimulates the colon's natural ability (peristalsis) to release waste. During a session, a series of fills and releases are administered by a certified colon hydrotherapist. The waste is removed from your colon through a waste hose and empties out directly into the sewer system. Everything is contained within the tubing so there is no odor or mess with the process. The removal of toxins from the body enhances colon functions, enabling your entire body to function more efficiently.

What are the benefits of colonics and how effective are they?

The most common benefits are weight loss, clearer complexion, digestive relief, increased energy and mental clarity. Colonics release toxins from your body, resulting in cleansing of your blood, strengthening your immune system, and restoring your natural pH balance to the body. Colon therapy also improves the muscle tone of your intestinal walls, which in turn assists in the absorption of nutrients into your body. As a result of this cleansing and improved muscle tone, people often experience a relief of many symptoms including constipation, gas, fatigue, and joint pain. Additionally, people experience increased energy, fewer illnesses, and overall well being and optimal health.

How do I know if I need colonics? Is there anyone who cannot have colonics?

The average adult, even if they're not overweight, can have 5-20 pounds of accumulated waste in the large intestine! (If you’re overweight, you could have even more!) This is a result of accumulated toxins, poor nutrition, erratic eating habits and excessive medication. A healthy colon should eliminate about 30 minutes after each meal. If you're not eliminating at least two to three times per day, you are considered clinically constipated! This toxic material can permeate the intestinal wall and leak into your blood stream, creating a wide variety of disruptive health problems, including weight gain, irritable bowel syndrome, headaches, fatigue, arthritis and more. If you are feeling sluggish, run down, achy, or bloated, you may have excess toxins in your blood stream and would be an excellent candidate for colonics.

If you have tried traditional Western remedies such as medication and have not seen much improvement in your health, you could benefit from a holistic approach which believes the body is a self healing organism and when in a balanced state, it starts to heal itself.

Under certain conditions, however, it is not advisable to have a colonic, so you may wish to check with your doctor if you experience any of these conditions: cardiac disease, aneurysm, anemia, severe hemorrhoids or diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, cirrhosis, advanced pregnancy, abdominal hernia, or recent colon surgery.

If you do not have any of the physical conditions indicated in the list of those who should not have a colonic, then the procedure should be perfectly safe for you. If you are still concerned about whether or not it is right for you, consult with your doctor, preferably a naturopathic physician, or schedule a consultation with one of our therapists who would be happy to answer all your questions.

How do colonics compare to an enema?

An enema only reaches about 1 foot into the colon, known as the sigmoid colon, which is the lowest part of the large intestine. The colonic system allows water to reach and cleanse the entire six feet of your colon, making it more effective than an enema. Enemas can be uncomfortable, many times requiring you to lie down on the bathroom floor. As compared to colonics, you are completely covered and in a private room with a trained therapist that walks you through the entire process.

What celebrities are detoxing and doing colonics?

Colon hydrotherapy and detox programs are Hollywood’s Best Kept Secret. Exclusive luxury detox spas have leading health experts providing cleansing programs for the rich and famous. Celebrities detox their bodies before a movie or a photo shoot to lose the excess pounds and get radiant glowing skin. They spend thousands of dollars (one of the most popular detox spas charges $5000 for a week!) Here’s just a few of the celebrities who are detoxing: Janet Jackson, Jewel, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Cindy Crawford, Alicia Silverstone, Usher, Tony Robbins, John Travolta, Lise Marie Priestly, Demi Moore, Liv Tyler and Beyonce. (For more info read “Everybody’s Doing It” on the Articles Page).

What can I expect during my colonic sessions?

You’ll be in session with your therapist for approximately 40 minutes. You’ll go to the bathroom, undress from the waist down, and change into a gown for the treatment. After you get comfortable on the colonic table, the session will begin. A certified, trained colon hydrotherapist is with you throughout the entire process, encouraging your body to detoxify more fully by using breathing and relaxation techniques. You are covered the entire time and your privacy is respected. Service is provided in a clean, tranquil, private room with soft music and aromatherapy. Your comfort is our total focus.

How will I feel after my session? Will I need to use the restroom often throughout the day?

After your session you may feel lighter, more energized, relaxed, and refreshed. Occasionally, some people feel the need to relax or take a nap, as the cleansing has released toxins and can tire the body. It is unlikely you will need to use the restroom throughout the day. Most people can go back to work and continue their daily routine as planned.

Is it painful?

Colon hydrotherapy is generally relaxing. Occasionally, some clients report minor gas-like discomfort as toxins are being released from the body. This is easily remedied by breathing and relaxation techniques. Your therapist can help alleviate any discomfort you may have. However, for most people the process is relaxing and restorative to overall health.

Is there any odor?

There is no odor during your treatment. We use a "closed system" where a tube takes warm water into the colon and a waste hose removes waste from the body. It travels through the colonic equipment and directly into to the sewer. There is no mess or odor.

Will colonic hydrotherapy remove the good, healthy bacteria with the bad?

It is a common misconception that colonics can strip the body of healthy bacteria. The truth is that the body is so resilient that it will produce healthy bacteria, within 30 minutes after your session. Your therapist will also provide flora grow (acidophilus) to help support this process.

How many colonics/ cleansing treatments will I need? How often should I come in?

It will take more than one colonic alone to rid your body of a lifetime of toxins. We recommend doing a 14 or 28 day detox program with a series of 6-12 colonics. We offer cutting edge detoxification programs that provide all the tools and support you need to achieve your goals. (See Programs for more details). Your therapist will help you determine which detox program will be best for you and your needs. We recommend coming in 2-3 times a week for the first month, for optimal results. It is perfectly safe to have 2-3 colonics in one week and will help accelerate the detox process.

Just like you get your teeth cleaned every 6 months or an oil change for your car every 3000 miles, it’s important to maintain your detox throughout the year. We recommend doing a detox program 2-4 times a year.

How much time should I allow for my appointments?

Your Initial Visit will be 90 minutes. All of your follow up colonic sessions allow 1 hour. You will be in session for 40-45 minutes, with some time before and after to change and use the restroom.

What should I wear to my colonic/cleansing treatments?

You can dress as normal. We provide a gown, robe and slippers to ensure your privacy and comfort.

Can I get a colonic if I have my period?

Yes, in fact having a colonic during your period is a great time to detox because your body is naturally cleansing itself during that time. A colonic may help relieve PMS symptoms, and any bloating and cramping you may be experiencing. Your privacy and cleanliness will be maintained throughout the entire session.

What are some concerns about safety and cleanliness? Can colonics be dangerous?

All colon therapy equipment used is FDA approved and is manufactured through compliance with strict federal guidelines that dictate rigorous accountability. All tubing is disposed of after each use, and the water filtration system is state-of-the-art, removing all toxins, microorganisms, and chlorine from the water. The water going into the colon is purified, with no chemicals or additives. The machine is cleaned and disinfected at a high temperature after each use. All therapists at Radiance Health Solutions are certified by the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy (http://www.i-act.org).

What should I look for when choosing a colon therapist?

When deciding on a colon therapist, make sure they have a business license and are I-ACT certified (International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy).
